The airline was established on 24 September 1946 by Australian Sydney H. de Kantzow and American Roy C. Farrell. The airline executed the world's first non-stop transpolar flight flying over the North Pole in July 1998, which was further the maiden flight to arrive at the then-new Hong Kong International Airport. The airline rejoiced its 60th anniversary in 2006 and as of October 2009, its major shareholders are Swire Pacific and Air China. It is reciprocally one of the important shareholders of Air China. On 6 November 2017, Qatar Airways got a 9.6% shareholding of Cathay Pacific, becoming its 3rd largest shareholder.

Cathay Pacific is the world's tenth largest airline ranked in terms of sales, and fourteenth largest measured in terms of market capitalization. In 2010, Cathay Pacific enhanced the world's massive international cargo airline, accompanying with main hub Hong Kong International Airport as the world's busiest airport in terms of cargo traffic.
