About this journey
Seven Sisters Discovery is a twelve-day private journey into India's extraordinary northeast — the arc of seven states that borders Tibet, Bhutan, Bangladesh, Myanmar, and China, and has been largely off-limits to international tourism for decades. Our carefully designed circuit focuses on Assam and Meghalaya: Kaziranga's rhinoceros and elephant population, the extraordinary living root bridges of Cherrapunji, the cleanest village in Asia at Mawlynnong, and the crystal-clear Umngot River at Dawki. This is a connoisseur's India journey — rare, intimate, and genuinely unlike anything else we offer.
Trip highlights
- Kaziranga National Park — UNESCO World Heritage Site and home to two-thirds of the world's one-horned rhinoceros population
- Elephant safari across the Brahmaputra floodplain at dawn

- Mawlynnong — Asia's cleanest village and sky walk over the Bangladesh plains

Day-by-day itinerary
Guwahati is the gateway to northeast India — a city sprawled across the south bank of the Brahmaputra, one of Asia's great rivers. Your private vehicle meets you at Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport and drives you to your hotel. The city itself is dense and active, but the river is extraordinary: at this point the Brahmaputra is often two or three kilometres wide, and the light on the water in the late afternoon has a quality particular to this latitude. Evening briefing with your guide about the journey ahead.
Kamakhya Temple, set on Nilachal Hill above the city, is one of the most important Shakti temples in India — ancient, powerful, and unlike the temple architecture of the north or south. Your guide provides the mythology, the ritual context, and the history of the site. The temple draws pilgrims from across India, and the atmosphere is intense and alive. Afternoon: a sunset cruise on the Brahmaputra by private boat — the river at this scale is humbling. Majuli Island visible in the distance.
The four-hour drive east from Guwahati to Kaziranga crosses the Brahmaputra floodplain — flat, wide, and increasingly green as you move into the reserve buffer zone. Kaziranga National Park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and home to two-thirds of the world's entire population of one-horned rhinoceros. Check in to your lodge on the park boundary. Evening game drive in a private jeep: the grasslands at dusk, the first rhinoceros sightings, the egrets on their backs.
Dawn begins on elephant back — the finest way to enter the tall elephant grass where rhinoceros feed. The low light, the dew, the absolute quiet broken only by birdsong and the occasional snort of a rhino at close range. Breakfast at the lodge, then a private jeep safari through a different zone of the park: wild buffalo, swamp deer, Gangetic river dolphins in the Diphlu river, and if fortune is with you, a tiger crossing in the open. Afternoon rest. Optional evening birding walk.
The drive southwest from Kaziranga to Shillong (around 4 hours) crosses the Brahmaputra plain and begins to climb toward the Meghalaya plateau. The change in landscape is dramatic — the grasslands give way to pine forests, cool air, and the peculiar atmosphere of a British hill station that never quite lost its colonial-era character. Shillong is the capital of Meghalaya and one of India's most unusual cities: a deep love of music (it is credited as the rock music capital of India), a strong Khasi cultural identity, and streets that feel more Scottish highland than Indian subcontinent.
Shillong's Cathedral of Mary Help of Christians is one of the finest Gothic church buildings in South Asia — built by Salesians in 1936 on a forested hilltop. Ward's Lake in the morning: a colonial-era ornamental lake surrounded by manicured gardens, rowboats, and the unhurried pace of a hill town. Afternoon: the city's music culture — Shillong has produced some of India's finest rock musicians and the city's cafes, record shops, and venues reflect that. Your guide introduces you to the local scene if of interest. Evening at leisure.
Cherrapunji (Sohra) holds the record for the highest annual rainfall ever recorded on earth. The drive from Shillong is 60 km along the Meghalaya plateau edge, with dramatic valley views dropping into Bangladesh below. Nohkalikai Falls — India's tallest plunge waterfall — visible in the monsoon season and still extraordinary in the dry months. Arwah Cave: limestone formations carved by millennia of rainwater. Check in to your lodge perched at the plateau's edge.
The double-decker living root bridge at Nongriat is one of the most remarkable natural engineering achievements anywhere. These bridges — grown from the aerial roots of the Ficus elastica rubber tree by the Khasi people over 500 years — are still used daily. The trek down (1,500 steps) and back is approximately three hours and requires reasonable fitness; your guide carries the context. A shorter single-tier root bridge at Mawlynnong (Asia's cleanest village) is accessible for all fitness levels. Mawlynnong itself — a Khasi village of extraordinary community pride — is one of the most memorable places on the northeast circuit.
The drive from Cherrapunji to Dawki drops toward the Bangladesh border. Dawki sits on the Umngot River — a stream so clear that the boats crossing it appear to float in air above the riverbed. The visual effect is extraordinary and the experience utterly peaceful. A private boat crossing and time on the water. The border crossing into Bangladesh (visible a short distance downstream) and the contrast between the two sides. Return toward Shillong for the night or onward to Guwahati.
Road from Dawki back through Shillong to Guwahati — a journey through Meghalaya's dramatic landscape. For guests extending to the Assam tea estates: a private visit to a working tea garden in the Brahmaputra valley, with the estate manager explaining the production of Assam's distinctive full-bodied tea. For guests on the standard circuit: Guwahati arrival and hotel for final night.
A final morning in Guwahati at your own pace. Optional visit to the Assam State Museum (natural history, tribal artefacts, Buddhist sculpture, and medieval stone art). The riverside market area for northeast India's distinctive handlooms, bamboo crafts, and Assam silk. Briefing on departure logistics.
Private vehicle to Guwahati Airport. Your concierge has confirmed check-in details and onward connections. Northeast India rarely lets guests leave without a plan to return — the region's beauty, its rarity, and its warmth tend to stay.

Northeast India Specialists — Genuine Depth
Northeast India is one of the world's most biodiverse and culturally complex regions — and one of the most misunderstood by mainstream tour operators. Globalduniya has a dedicated northeast India team with on-the-ground contacts across Assam, Meghalaya, Arunachal and Nagaland.
Inner Line Permits — Managed in Advance
Several northeast states require Inner Line Permits for foreign nationals and some OCI card holders. We manage all permit applications, timelines and documentation in advance of travel — including the Protected Area Permit for Arunachal Pradesh — so your journey encounters no bureaucratic interruption.
Kaziranga — Wildlife Expertise
Kaziranga National Park is home to two-thirds of the world's greater one-horned rhinoceros population. Dawn elephant safaris enter the floodplain at first light — the optimal wildlife viewing window. Our Kaziranga contacts ensure Zone allocation in the Central and Western Ranges where density is highest.
Meghalaya's Living Root Bridges
The double-decker living root bridges near Cherrapunji are among the most extraordinary natural structures in India. Reaching them requires a 3,000-step descent. We prepare our guests with the right pacing, the right footwear, and a local guide who knows the forest paths by name.
