Day-by-day itinerary
Your journey begins where the Buddha's journey ended — and a new one started. Bodh Gaya is the most sacred site in Buddhism: the place where Siddhartha Gautama sat beneath a fig tree and attained enlightenment. Your private vehicle brings you from Gaya Airport to your heritage hotel. This afternoon: the Mahabodhi Temple complex — a UNESCO World Heritage Site — with your expert Buddhist heritage guide. The Bodhi Tree, the Vajrasana (the diamond seat), the surrounding temples built by Buddhist nations from Thailand to Japan. The evening is quiet. The site continues to breathe after the visitors leave.
Dawn meditation in the Mahabodhi Temple gardens — available to all visitors regardless of faith. The sacred atmosphere at first light is unlike any other site on the circuit. Your guide then takes you to the Bodh Gaya Archaeological Museum — some of the finest Pala-period Buddhist sculpture in India. Afternoon: a longer walk through the international monastery complex — Tibetan, Thai, Japanese, Bhutanese monasteries surround Bodh Gaya, each a window into how Buddhism spread and transformed across Asia. Evening at leisure.
The drive north to Rajgir (about 90 km). Rajgir is where the Buddha spent several rainy seasons and where the first Buddhist Council was convened after his death. Vulture Peak (Griddhakuta) — the rocky outcrop where the Buddha gave some of his most important discourses — reached by cable car or on foot. Rajgir's hot springs, ancient ramparts, and the Venuvana monastery. Late afternoon drive to Nalanda.
Nalanda was the greatest centre of Buddhist learning in the ancient world — a residential university that flourished for 700 years, attracting scholars from China, Korea, Japan, and Southeast Asia. At its peak it housed 10,000 monks and teachers. The ruins — excavated over decades — reveal dormitories, lecture halls, temples, and libraries. The Nalanda Museum holds the finest on-site collection of Buddhist bronzes and terracottas in Bihar. Your guide situates Nalanda within the history of Indian civilisation and global intellectual exchange.
Drive north to Vaishali — one of the world's first republican states and a place deeply connected to the Buddha's final journey. The Ashoka Pillar at Vaishali (one of the finest surviving examples of Mauryan artistry), the Relic Stupa that contains the Buddha's ashes, and the archaeological site of the ancient republic. Vaishali is little-visited but deeply significant: here the Buddha gave his final discourse before proceeding to Kushinagar.
Drive west to Kushinagar — the site of the Buddha's Mahaparinirvana (his final passing into nirvana). The Mahaparinirvana Temple houses a reclining Buddha figure of extraordinary power. The Ramabhar Stupa marks the cremation site. Your guide interprets the final chapters of the Buddha's life — the last journey, the last teachings, the assembled monks, and the extraordinary event that ended 80 years of teaching. A contemplative afternoon.
Drive to Shravasti — where the Buddha spent the most rainy seasons (24) of his teaching life. The Jetavana monastery grove — given to the Buddha by the merchant Anathapindika — is one of the most important sites on the circuit and one of the least visited. The atmosphere is peaceful, forested, and deeply sacred. The ruins of the ancient monastery, the gandha-kuti (the Buddha's personal dwelling), and the surrounding stupas. An afternoon of genuine quiet.
Road to Varanasi — the great city on the Ganges that existed as a centre of learning and philosophy at the same time as the Buddha was teaching nearby. The evening Ganga Aarti at Dashashwamedh Ghat: a Hindu ritual, but one that illuminates the religious landscape the Buddha was born into and responded to. Your guide draws the connections between Vedic religion, the Shramana movement, and the emergence of Buddhism. A complex and beautiful evening.
A morning boat on the Ganges — the city's sacred heart visible from the water. Then 13 km to Sarnath: the Deer Park where the Buddha gave his first discourse (the Dhammacakkappavattana Sutta) to his five former companions after his enlightenment. The Dhamek Stupa marks the precise spot. The Sarnath Museum holds the Lion Capital of Ashoka — now India's national emblem — and the finest Gupta-period Buddhist sculpture anywhere. A full morning in one of the most important sites in world religious history.
A day in Varanasi at a slower pace. The old city lanes, the Kashi Vishwanath temple complex, the ghats in the afternoon light. Optional: a private meditation session with a Buddhist teacher working in Varanasi (arranged on request). Optional: a Yoga and Ayurveda introduction at one of the city's classical schools. Evening at leisure — the ghats after dark have their own music.

Buddhist Pilgrimage Specialists
The Buddha Circuit requires a guide who understands Theravada, Mahayana and Vajrayana traditions — not just the UNESCO facts. Our Buddhist circuit specialists have studied with monastic communities and provide a depth of interpretation that transforms the sites from historical monuments into living sacred spaces.
Bodh Gaya — Private Dawn Access
Dawn at the Mahabodhi Temple is the most profound moment of the Buddhist circuit. Our consultants know the precise access routes, meditation spots, and the rhythms of monastic life at dawn. We position our guests to witness — not disrupt — the sacred quiet of the world's most important Buddhist site.
Asia Extensions — Seamlessly Integrated
Many of our guests extend from the Indian Buddha Circuit to Sri Lanka, Thailand, Myanmar or Japan. Globalduniya manages these multi-destination Buddhist itineraries as a single, coordinated journey — visas, logistics, guides and accommodation across multiple countries handled by one team.
Nalanda and the Intellectual Tradition
Nalanda University was the greatest centre of learning in the ancient world. We ensure every guest on the Buddha Circuit understands this legacy — not just as a ruined site but as the intellectual foundation of Buddhist scholarship across Asia. Our guides bring the site to life through scholarship, not just facts.
