The Ganga Aarti at Dashashwamedh Ghat — 108 priests in synchronised ritual as the sun descends behind the ghats — is the most powerful ceremony I have witnessed anywhere in the world. The pre-dawn boat ride revealed life on the ghats in all its raw, beautiful complexity. The Golden Triangle cities were excellent, as expected. But Varanasi transformed this from a sightseeing trip into a genuine journey. Our guide Suresh in Varanasi was exceptional — thoughtful, philosophical and deeply knowledgeable.”

Haridwar's version at Har Ki Pauri is different — the current is faster, the ghats are more compact, and the whole ceremony has a concentrated intensity. Standing waist-deep in the Ganges alongside thousands of pilgrims as the lamps pass overhead is an experience I will carry for the rest of my life. By day two of the trip, they were photographing everything and asking our guide constant questions about Mughal history, Jain architecture and Indian cuisine. The food challenge we set — trying one new dish per day — became a family competition. The cooking class in Jaipur was a particular highlight. Globalduniya adapted the itinerary in real time when our older child wanted more time at Amber Fort. That flexibility is what makes a guided trip with children worthwhile.”

“Travelling with a mixed-age group that included my 68-year-old mother-in-law, my husband and our six-year-old daughter required careful organisation. Globalduniya designed the easy-pace itinerary specifically around our group. The driving was always in an appropriately large vehicle, lunch breaks were always at a restaurant with clean facilities and cooling, and activities were always given with optional escalation levels. Our six-year-old's favourite moment was feeding a elephant at the ethical sanctuary. My mother-in-law's was the Taj at dawn. Mine was seeing both of them happy.”

My guide Rajendra understood photography requirements and positioned us at every location at the right time. The Jaisalmer fort interior at dawn, before tourists arrive, produced the images I had hoped for. The desert camp at sunset with the sand dunes as foreground was the single best photographic opportunity I have had in thirty years of travel photography.”

Madurai's Meenakshi Amman Temple — the scale of the gopurams (towers) covered in thousands of painted figures — is unlike anything we have seen in decades of travelling. Our guide Muthu's explanation of the temple's cosmology and daily worship rhythm made it genuinely comprehensible. Kerala's backwaters provided the perfect counterpoint — gentle, quiet, green. The Brihadisvara's 1000-year-old vimana tower at 66 metres remains one of the tallest pre-modern structures in Asia.
