Practical tips from your guide
- 💡Old Goa's Basilica of Bom Jesus (UNESCO) is best visited early morning before cruise-ship day-trippers arrive
- 💡Hampi's Virupaksha Temple is active and sacred — remove shoes at the gate and dress conservatively
- 💡Hire a bicycle in Hampi for the day — distances between ruins are 1–5 km and largely flat
- 💡The Goa-Hampi overnight sleeper train (Vasco da Gama Express) is an experience in itself — book 60 days ahead
- 💡Goan fish curry at a beach shack costs ₹250; the same dish at a hotel restaurant is ₹900 — same quality, very different price

A route that most India visitors never discover
Most of my friends who visit India do Delhi–Agra–Jaipur. Globalduniya suggested this itinerary as an alternative and I am so glad I took their advice. Goa's north is different from the south — quieter, more Portuguese in character, better for heritage exploration. And Hampi is genuinely one of the most extraordinary archaeological sites I have visited anywhere in the world. The train from Goa to Hubli and then transfer to Hampi was well organised and the accommodation throughout was comfortable. My guide at Hampi, Shiva, was outstanding — knowledgeable, patient and excellent English.
Response from Globalduniya · Rohan Verma · India Operations Director
Merci, Catherine — recommending this route over the well-worn Golden Triangle path is something we do with confidence when guests are open to it. Shiva is one of our most experienced Hampi guides and his command of the site's history across multiple dynasties is exceptional.

Hampi was the surprise of the trip — unlike anywhere else on earth
We planned this trip for the Goa beaches and discovered that Hampi was the highlight of our entire journey. The scale of the Vijayanagara ruins is genuinely staggering — over 26 square kilometres of temples, royal enclosures, elephant stables and marketplaces spread across a surreal boulder landscape. Our guide Prakash brought the 14th-century empire to life in a way no guidebook could. The contrast between the busy beach resort energy of Goa and the quiet, timeless atmosphere of Hampi was perfectly judged. Both were excellent in their own way. The heritage hotel in Hampi was basic but characterful and entirely appropriate to the setting.
Response from Globalduniya · Rohan Verma · India Operations Director
Hampi's scale surprises almost every visitor, Sophie and Ben — you genuinely cannot grasp the extent of the Vijayanagara empire from photographs. Prakash has guided at Hampi for fourteen years and his storytelling brings the ruins back to life. Thank you for this wonderful review.

Hampi: I came for Goa, I stayed for Hampi in my memory
I will be honest — I booked this trip for the Goa beach days. Hampi was something I agreed to include on the advice of Globalduniya. Within an hour of arriving at Hampi I understood why it had been recommended so strongly. The boulders, the ruins, the river — it is unlike anywhere I have been before. My guide Mohan was extraordinary. Goa was lovely — the beach, the seafood, the laid-back atmosphere. But Hampi is what I talk about when people ask about this trip.
Response from Globalduniya · Rohan Verma · India Operations Director
Niamh, this is exactly what we hope for from this itinerary — the Hampi revelation. Mohan has a gift for making first-time visitors understand the scale and ambition of what was once one of the world's greatest cities. Thank you for trusting our recommendation.

Best beach + heritage combination in India
Goa's Portuguese heritage and seafood, followed by the dramatic boulder landscapes and medieval temples of Hampi — this is a combination that works beautifully. In Goa we had four days at a Panjim boutique hotel with excellent positioning for Old Goa's churches (a UNESCO site) and the beach. The transition to Hampi felt like a different world entirely. Our Hampi guide was brilliant — clearly passionate about the site and able to answer every question we threw at him. The sunrise at the Virupaksha Temple was magical. Globalduniya's organisation throughout was seamless.
Response from Globalduniya · Rohan Verma · India Operations Director
Thank you James and Fiona — the Goa to Hampi combination is one of our most requested itineraries and it works precisely because the two destinations complement rather than compete with each other. The Virupaksha sunrise is something we include specifically for guests staying in Hampi.

Second India trip and this beat our first
We did the Golden Triangle on our first visit to India. This combination of Goa and Hampi felt more authentic and more adventurous. Old Goa's Baroque churches — the Basilica of Bom Jesus in particular — are genuinely world-class and see a fraction of the visitors of the major North India monuments. Hampi is simply jaw-dropping and we spent two full days exploring and still did not see everything. The Goa resort was excellent — pool, beach, and brilliant fish curry. A very well-curated route.
Response from Globalduniya · Rohan Verma · India Operations Director
Thank you Mark and Deborah — the Basilica of Bom Jesus is one of India's finest examples of Portuguese Baroque and we always prioritise it on the Goa section. The comment about feeling more authentic than the Golden Triangle is one we hear from experienced India travellers on this itinerary.

Beautiful Ruins but Tiring Journey
The trip was well-planned overall, and Hampi’s ruins were definitely the highlight—the Queen’s Bath and Tungabhadra River were stunning! Old Goa offered fascinating insights into its Portuguese colonial past. However, I found the bus journey from Hampi to Goa to be overly long and tiring. That said, relaxing at the Acron Waterfront Resort once we reached made up for it. The staff was very attentive.
Response from Globalduniya · Priya Nair · Regional Operations Manager
Thank you for your honest review, John. We are thrilled you enjoyed most aspects of the trip and have noted your feedback about the travel time. We’re always working to refine our logistics for a better experience.

Region: South India, India.
November to February for ideal beach and heritage weather. Monsoon (June–September) floods some Hampi ruins but the surrounding rice paddies are magnificently green.
Questions about this package
Not with us managing the logistics. The overnight Vasco da Gama Express train takes approximately 9 hours — we book 2AC berths and it departs Goa at a reasonable evening hour, arriving in Hospet (4 km from Hampi) in the morning. Alternatively, a private car transfer (7–8 hrs) is available for those who prefer road.
Both. Hampi's Vijayanagara ruins (UNESCO World Heritage) are so visually dramatic — boulder landscapes, elephant stables, temple tanks, royal enclosures — that they engage everyone regardless of history interest. The 'Mars landscape' terrain alone makes it worthwhile. Our guide calibrates the depth of explanation to the group's level.
Yes. The reverse sequence (Hampi → Goa) works equally well and is sometimes preferred for guests arriving from South India. The only consideration is Goa hotel check-in timing — we adjust the itinerary direction at no extra charge if you prefer the alternative sequence.
