Practical tips from your guide

  • 💡Jaisalmer's sand dunes are at their most photogenic at dawn (5:30–7:00 am) — not sunset, when crowds are concentrated
  • 💡Book a rooftop dinner at a Jaisalmer haveli on your first night — the fort illuminated against the night sky is a moment guests consistently rate highest
  • 💡Bikaner's Junagarh Fort is underrated and less crowded than Jaipur's Amber — your guide can arrange an after-hours visit through contacts
  • 💡The Sambhar Salt Lake near Jaipur (a 90-minute detour) is spectacular from December–January when flamingos feed in the shallows
  • 💡Avoid purchasing camel-leather goods near the main dune areas — prices are triple the market rate; bazaar shopping in the fort is the correct venue

Solo in Rajasthan — photography paradise with perfect guiding

I came to Rajasthan as a landscape and portrait photographer and Globalduniya's team briefed on my specific requirements before departure: golden hour positioning, market access, permission for interior photography where possible. My guide Rajendra understood photography requirements and positioned us at every location at the right time. The Jaisalmer fort interior at dawn, before tourists arrive, produced the images I had hoped for. The desert camp at sunset with the sand dunes as foreground was the single best photographic opportunity I have had in thirty years of travel photography.

Response from Globalduniya · Rohan Verma · India Operations Director

Robert, Rajendra's understanding of photography positioning — light angle, crowd timing, interior access — is something we specifically match to photography-focused guests. The Jaisalmer fort interior at dawn access requires prior arrangement and we are glad it produced the images you were seeking. Thank you.

The best two weeks of our lives — Rajasthan delivered on every promise

We researched Rajasthan extensively before booking. Globalduniya's desert and palaces itinerary covered more ground than I thought possible in eleven days — Jaipur, Pushkar, Jodhpur, Jaisalmer, Udaipur — without feeling rushed because the driving distances are manageable and the guides made every road journey interesting. The Pushkar camel fair (we timed our visit specifically) was an extraordinary spectacle. Jodhpur's Mehrangarh Fort is the greatest fort in India in our view — nothing else comes close for scale, preservation and drama of setting. The view over the blue city from the cannon bastion is one of India's great panoramas.

Response from Globalduniya · Rohan Verma · India Operations Director

Julia and Matthew, timing the Pushkar visit for the camel fair requires careful advance planning and we are glad it worked. Mehrangarh is a fort we show with real pride — the scale of the battlements, the refined carving on the lattice screens within, and the museum's weapons and textiles collection are all exceptional. Thank you.

Rajasthan's colours are like nowhere else on earth

Jodhpur's blue streets, Jaisalmer's golden sandstone, Udaipur's white marble on a blue lake, Jaipur's pink terraces — Rajasthan's palette is extraordinary and deliberately chosen. Our guide explained that the blue of Jodhpur's Brahmin quarter was originally a natural insect repellent and the colour became a status marker over centuries. That kind of contextual detail transformed our photographs into understanding. The desert camp was a revelation. The camel at sunset, the stars, the Rajasthani folk music — everything we hoped for India and rarely find so completely. Excellent itinerary.

Response from Globalduniya · Rohan Verma · India Operations Director

Henri et Marguerite, the historical explanation behind Jodhpur's blue — indigo from the neem tree, originally for insect protection, later codified by caste — is exactly the kind of detail that transforms observation into understanding. The desert camp experience at Jaisalmer is very carefully curated. Merci.

Sleeping under the Thar Desert stars — a memory we will carry forever

The desert camp at Jaisalmer was the highlight of a trip full of highlights. We arrived at the sand dunes outside Jaisalmer by camel at sunset, watched the sky turn through orange to violet over the dunes, ate dinner around a campfire with traditional Rajasthani musicians, and slept in a well-furnished tent under a sky so bright with stars we could see our shadows. No electricity, no light pollution, complete silence except for the wind. Jaisalmer's golden sandstone fort — the only living fort in India, with families still residing within the walls — was extraordinary. Our guide's explanation of the Jain merchants' haveli architecture inside the fort added depth we would have missed entirely.

Response from Globalduniya · Rohan Verma · India Operations Director

Colin and Margaret, the Jaisalmer desert camp sunset and star experience is one we protect carefully — the timing of the camel arrival at the dunes matters enormously, and the music selection around the campfire is curated rather than generic. The living fort's Jain haveli interiors are accessible only with the right guide contact. Thank you.

The Thar Desert and Rajput palaces — a combination that should be on every traveller's list

Rajasthan is one of those destinations we had talked about for years without booking because it seemed too obviously popular — we worried it would be overrun. We were wrong. Even at the most visited sites (Amber Fort, Mehrangarh, Jaisalmer Fort) there are times of day — early morning, late afternoon — when the crowds thin and the atmosphere becomes extraordinary. Our guide knew exactly when those times were. Jaisalmer's living fort at dusk, the narrow alleys golden in the fading light and the smell of local cooking from open doors, was everything we hoped for. The desert camp was perfection.

Response from Globalduniya · Rohan Verma · India Operations Director

Ingrid and Lars, the timing knowledge our guides apply at Rajasthan's major sites is built from years of daily observation of light and crowds. Jaisalmer at dusk is one of those windows where the gold of the sandstone and the gold of the light become indistinguishable. Thank you.

A magical journey through Rajasthan!

The Rajasthan Desert and Palaces package offered a breathtaking experience. From the intricate City Palace in Udaipur to the golden sands of Jaisalmer, every moment felt like stepping into history. Pushkar's serene lake was a perfect contrast to Jaipur's bustling streets. The accommodations were authentic yet comfortable, and the guides added so much depth to the stories behind each landmark. Highly recommended!

Response from Globalduniya · Rohan Verma · India Operations Director

Thank you, Emma, for your kind words! We are thrilled you enjoyed the majestic essence of Rajasthan and its timeless attractions. We look forward to hosting you again in the future!

About India

A focused Rajasthan loop designed for travellers who want the palaces, forts and the Thar Desert without the Delhi preamble. Start in Jaipur, move through the Blue City of Jodhpur, spend two nights in the Jaisalmer desert, and end in romantic Udaipur. Privately managed, heritage accommodation, and expert local guides at every destination.

Region: Rajasthan, India.

November to February is ideal — the desert is warm by day and cool by night. October and March are good shoulder months. Avoid April through September when the Thar Desert records extreme temperatures.

Questions about this package

Rajasthan Desert & Palaces specifically prioritises the western desert cities (Jaisalmer and Bikaner) alongside Jaipur and Jodhpur, giving you the full Thar Desert experience including a camel safari and desert camp overnight. Many Rajasthan circuits omit Bikaner (Junagarh Fort, camel research centre) — we consider it essential.

Yes. One night in a luxury desert camp near Sam Sand Dunes (45 km from Jaisalmer) is included. Camps have permanent Swiss-tent accommodation with attached bathrooms, dining hall, and a folk music performance around the campfire. These are not basic camping setups — luxury-category camps have attached bathrooms and proper beds. Your camel safari delivers you to the camp at sunset.

The National Research Centre on Camel (NRCC) at Bikaner is India's only camel breeding and research facility — it has over 400 camels and is genuinely fascinating for any nature or agriculture enthusiast. A 1.5-hour guided visit is included in this itinerary. Camel milk ice cream at the facility's café is a popular stop.
