Rajasthan 7-Day Itinerary — Jaipur, Jodhpur & Jaisalmer
Seven days is the ideal time for a Rajasthan road trip. Here's the best route covering the Pink City, the Blue City, and the Golden City — with real costs and practical tips.
Rajasthan is India at its most cinematic — flamboyant forts, painted havelis, camel-dotted desert, and royal hospitality that has not changed since the Maharajas. Seven days is the sweet spot: long enough to see three distinct cities without feeling rushed, short enough to keep the trip focused and energised.
Best Time for Rajasthan
October to March is the ideal window — cool days (15–28°C), clear skies, and all festivals. November sees the Pushkar Camel Fair. February has the Jaipur Literature Festival. Avoid April to June: 42–48°C is brutal. Monsoon (July–September) brings surprising greenery to the desert but can disrupt road travel.
7-Day Rajasthan Itinerary
Day-by-day plan (Jaipur arrival, Jaipur or Jodhpur departure):
- Day 1 – Jaipur: Arrive Jaipur. Afternoon at Hawa Mahal and Johari Bazaar. Dinner at a rooftop restaurant with fort views.
- Day 2 – Jaipur: Amber Fort (jeep up, explore for 2 hours). City Palace. Jantar Mantar. Nahargarh Fort at sunset. Albert Hall Museum.
- Day 3 – Jaipur → Pushkar → Ajmer → Jodhpur: Morning at Pushkar — Brahma Temple, sacred lake. Lunch in Pushkar. Drive to Jodhpur via Ajmer Dargah (optional). Arrive Jodhpur evening.
- Day 4 – Jodhpur: Mehrangarh Fort — one of India's most impressive forts. Clock Tower Sardar Market. Mandore Gardens. Rooftop dinner with fort view.
- Day 5 – Jodhpur → Osian → Jaisalmer: Morning excursion to Osian temples (65 km, ancient Jain and Hindu temples). Arrive Jaisalmer by evening.
- Day 6 – Jaisalmer: Jaisalmer Fort (living fort — still inhabited). Patwon Ki Haveli. Sam Sand Dunes: afternoon camel ride, sunset, folk music and dinner at desert camp.
- Day 7 – Jaisalmer → Departure: Morning at the lake and local market. Fly from Jaisalmer (JLR) to Delhi or drive 5 hours to Jodhpur airport.
Book Sam Sand Dunes camp in advance
Desert camps at Sam (45 km from Jaisalmer) range from basic tents to luxury Swiss-tent camps. During peak season (October–February), the best camps book out 2–3 months ahead. Book directly or through a trusted operator — touts in Jaisalmer city are aggressive.

Is 7 days enough for Rajasthan?
7 days covers 3 cities comfortably (Jaipur, Jodhpur, Jaisalmer). To add Udaipur (the most romantic of all), plan 10 days. Jaipur–Jodhpur–Jaisalmer–Udaipur is a complete Rajasthan circuit and takes 10–12 days done properly.
What is Rajasthan best known for?
Rajasthan is best known for its magnificent forts (Mehrangarh, Amber, Jaisalmer), royal palaces, camel safaris in the Thar Desert, colourful bazaars, traditional folk music and dance, and heritage hotels (haveli and palace hotels). It is also a significant wildlife destination with Ranthambore (tigers) and Bharatpur (birds).
Which Rajasthan city should I not miss?
If you can only visit one city, make it Jodhpur — Mehrangarh Fort is arguably the most impressive fort in India, the blue city is visually dramatic, and it is less overtouristed than Jaipur. But Jaisalmer's desert setting and Udaipur's lake setting are both unique experiences.
Is Rajasthan safe for foreign tourists?
Yes. Rajasthan is one of India's most developed tourist destinations with well-maintained roads, trained guides, and excellent hotels. The main caution is aggressive touts in bazaars and near major sights — politely decline and move on. Using a registered guide or driver reduces hassle significantly.
What are the best heritage hotels in Rajasthan?
For converted palaces: Umaid Bhawan Palace (Jodhpur), Rambagh Palace (Jaipur), Taj Lake Palace (Udaipur). For mid-range heritage: Raas (Jodhpur), Zostel Jaisalmer for budget heritage experience. The government-run RTDC palace hotels (Jal Mahal, etc.) offer authentic settings at reasonable rates.
