Practical tips from your guide

  • 💡Cherry blossom dates shift 5–10 days year to year — we book flexible rail passes and hotels and monitor the forecast from January
  • 💡Shinkansen (bullet train): do not eat on the platform — eating is only permitted in the train seats
  • 💡Tokyo subway: buy an IC card (Suica or Pasmo) at Narita airport — works on every train, bus, and many convenience stores
  • 💡Kyoto's Fushimi Inari torii gates: start at 6 am and walk the full 2-hour loop before tour groups arrive at 9 am
  • 💡Takayama old town (Sanmachi Suji): sake brewery visits are free and the tasting is generous — allow 30 minutes at each

About Japan

Region: East Asia, Japan.

Best time to visit: March, April.

Late March to mid-April for cherry blossom — exact dates confirmed 6 weeks in advance based on Japan Meteorological Corporation forecasts. November for autumn foliage. Both seasons require booking 5–6 months ahead.

Questions about this package

Cherry blossom (sakura) dates are forecast by the Japan Meteorological Corporation from late January each year, based on winter temperature data. Peak bloom in Tokyo is typically March 20–April 5; Kyoto is 5–7 days later. We share the first forecast with all booked guests in late January and confirm the optimal travel days. Our hotel and rail bookings have flexibility clauses specifically for this.

Yes. A 7-day Japan Rail Pass (JR Pass) is included — valid on all JR Shinkansen (except Nozomi and Mizuho fastest services) and local JR lines. This covers Tokyo–Kyoto (2.5 hours), Kyoto–Hiroshima (1.5 hours), and all urban JR stations. The JR Pass is activated on Day 1 in Tokyo and we assist with activation at the station.

Japan's food culture is largely based on fish, meat, and dashi (fish stock) — finding strictly vegetarian Japanese food is genuinely challenging. However, Indian restaurants are present in Tokyo and Kyoto. We include 2 dinners at recommended Indian restaurants in the itinerary. Japanese shojin ryori (Buddhist temple cuisine, fully vegan) is a remarkable alternative that we arrange as an optional experience.
