Practical tips from your guide
- 💡Specify 'lake-facing' when we book your Alleppey houseboat — side canals are quieter but the open lake at sunset is exceptional
- 💡Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary's best hours are 6–8 am — hire a small canoe at the sanctuary entrance rather than joining a group boat
- 💡The Kalari martial arts demonstration in Thrissur is best watched at the traditional kalari akhara, not the tourist show version — ask us to arrange access
- 💡Kerala massage (Abhyanga) is most beneficial across 3–5 consecutive days — one session relaxes; repeated sessions restore
- 💡Pack a light rain jacket regardless of month — Kerala's humidity can produce afternoon showers even in the dry season

Munnar's tea estates in early morning mist — pure magic
We arrived at Munnar at sunrise through rolling mist — the tea bushes bright green against the cloud and the smell of tea processing from the Tata estate filling the cool air. This is one of the world's great landscapes for tea country and Globalduniya timed our arrival perfectly. The estate tour with the factory visit showed the full journey from bush to cup. Fort Kochi's Dutch and Portuguese heritage is unexpectedly rich for a coastal Indian town. The backwaters overnight was peaceful and the food was exceptional throughout Kerala. I will recommend this itinerary to everyone.
Response from Globalduniya · Rohan Verma · India Operations Director
Astrid, the Munnar morning arrival timing is something our team calibrates specifically for the mist conditions — the cool early morning air and the factory processing smell together create a sensory experience that midday visitors miss entirely. Thank you for this wonderful description.

Solo travel in Kerala — safe, beautiful and deeply restorative
I chose Kerala as a solo destination specifically because Globalduniya's team described it as one of India's safest and most welcoming regions for solo women travellers. They were absolutely right. I felt completely comfortable in every setting — Kochi's Fort area, the houseboat, the Ayurvedic retreat, Varkala's cliff beach. The guides were professional and respectful. The houseboat cook prepared fresh seafood caught that morning for every meal. The prawn curry with coconut milk on the backwaters at sunset is a meal I will not forget.
Response from Globalduniya · Rohan Verma · India Operations Director
Margaret, we take the safety and comfort of solo female travellers very seriously in our Kerala operation. The houseboat cook is one of our most appreciated inclusions — the fresh catch from the backwaters, prepared with coconut and curry leaves, is a Kerala experience that restaurant menus simply cannot replicate. Thank you.

Ireland to Kerala — opposite ends of the world, oddly similar souls
There is something about Kerala — the greenness, the rain, the fishing community culture, the quiet dignity of village life — that felt oddly familiar to two people from the west of Ireland. Of course it is entirely different, but the spirit felt kindred. Our houseboat captain, whose family has worked the backwaters for four generations, showed us his grandmother's fishing technique. That conversation was worth the whole journey. The soft luxury throughout — not the grand hotels of North India, but beautifully maintained boutique properties with excellent food — was exactly what we wanted.
Response from Globalduniya · Rohan Verma · India Operations Director
William and Catherine, the comparison between Kerala and Ireland's west coast spirit is one of the most original observations we have received from guests — and there is something to it. The backwaters captain's family history is exactly the kind of human connection that elevates a journey beyond sightseeing. Thank you.

Kerala's backwaters and Ayurveda — the perfect slow travel combination
We specifically chose this itinerary for the slower pace and the Ayurveda inclusion. The three-night Ayurvedic retreat at Kairali near Palakkad was genuine Ayurveda — diagnostic consultation, personalised treatment programme, special diet — not a spa menu with an Indian name. Our Ayurvedic physician Dr Suresh was rigorous and the treatments were deeply restoring. The backwaters houseboat overnight and the Munnar tea estate walk were excellent additions. Kerala is genuinely beautiful — green, calm and kind. Globalduniya selected the accommodation beautifully throughout.
Response from Globalduniya · Rohan Verma · India Operations Director
Laura and Philip, Kairali is one of India's most respected Ayurvedic centres and we only recommend it to guests who want the diagnostic approach rather than wellness tourism. Dr Suresh's consultation process is exactly what distinguishes clinical Ayurveda from spa treatments. We are glad the pace worked for you.

Fort Kochi's Chinese fishing nets at dawn — a scene unchanged for 500 years
The Chinese fishing nets on Fort Kochi's waterfront — the cantilevered bamboo structures introduced by Chinese traders in the 14th century — at dawn when the fishermen are working and mist lies on the water, is a scene of extraordinary beauty. Our guide arranged early morning access to the net operator and we were able to help pull the ropes. The backwaters overnight was perfect — breakfast of appam and stew on the deck with egrets wading in the shallows. The Ayurveda session at our beach resort in Varkala was a wonderful final element. Kerala is a masterpiece of a state.
Response from Globalduniya · Rohan Verma · India Operations Director
Christopher and Diana, the fishing net access at dawn is one of our Fort Kochi specialities — it requires the right contact and the right timing. Appam and stew on the backwaters with egrets is the quintessential Kerala morning and we are so glad it delivered. Thank you for this lovely description.

Serenity in every corner of Kerala
The moment we arrived in Kochi, the vibrant culture had us fascinated. However, the highlight was cruising through Alleppey’s backwaters on the traditional houseboat – a surreal experience. Thekkady’s spice plantations were lush and invigorating, and the cool climate of Munnar was perfect for tea enthusiasts like myself. Beautifully planned journey overall!
Response from Globalduniya · Rohan Verma · India Operations Director
Dear Jennifer, thank you for your kind words! We’re delighted you enjoyed the houseboat and our curated experiences in Kerala. We hope to host you again soon.

Questions about this package
Kerala Soft Luxury uses boutique heritage properties and boutique eco-resorts rather than chain hotels. The pace is deliberately slower with 2–3 nights per location rather than one-night stops. Activities are qualitative over quantitative — one excellent Ayurvedic session rather than a rushed tick-list. Maximum group size (if travelling with others) is 6.
A 2-hour Ayurvedic treatment session (Abhyanga full-body massage followed by Shirodhara oil-pouring therapy) at a Kerala Ayurveda Gram or equivalent traditional institute is included. The session is conducted by certified Ayurvedic therapists. A consultation with an Ayurvedic physician (20 minutes) is available as a supplement.
Yes. A Kerala cooking class with a local family in a traditional tharavadu (ancestral home) near Alleppey is included. You prepare 4–5 dishes (fish curry, avial, puttu, payasam) and eat the meal you cook. This is a private class, not a group session — the family are long-standing Globalduniya partners.
